Cedar Creek HS Engineering Seniors to compete in National Finals of World’s Largest Student Rocketry Competition
A team of Seniors, (Clinton Rood, Naman Patel, Jakob Dase and Richie Gonzales) from Cedar Creek’s Engineering program are among 100 national finalists in the American Rocketry Challenge. The students will compete against other teams at the National Finals, taking place on May 16 in The Plains, VA, just outside Washington, DC. The team was chosen to represent NJ at the Rockets on Capitol Hill event on Friday, May 15th
Teams will be vying for $100,000 in awards and the top 25 teams will automatically be eligible to earn a spot in NASA’s Student Launch Initiative. The team is being advised by Lisa Martinelli and Richard Zucal through the Engineering Design and Development Program at Cedar Creek.
This year’s American Rocketry Competition featured 1,107 teams — more teams than ever before — and more than 6,200 middle and high school students from 44 states, plus Washington, DC, and the Northern Mariana Islands. For 2026, each team was required to design, build, and launch model rockets that safely carry one raw egg to an altitude of 750 feet, stay airborne for between 36 and 39 seconds, and return the rocket to the ground safely. This is Cedar Creek’s first time competing in the challenge. Sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association, the National Association of Rocketry, and more than 15 industry, government, and academia partners, the American Rocketry Challenge is the aerospace and defense industry’s flagship program designed to encourage students to study and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Now in its 24th year, the competition has inspired middle and high school students to explore education and careers in STEM fields.
In addition to the main competition the Cedar Creek Team was chosen to represent NJ at the Rockets on the Hill event on Friday, May 15th
Rockets on the Hill brings together select American Rocketry Challenge teams to share their work with Members of Congress, congressional staff, industry leaders, and the public, highlighting the impact of hands‑on STEM education and student innovation. Teams will have the opportunity to display their rockets, discuss their design process, and represent their state while engaging directly with national leaders.
